Once again I write about the ever fantastic world of glass splashbacks and glass worktops. Yippee I hear you cry!! Why can't I hear more about this subject. It truly makes my day!! In the darkest days of wintery February with the economic world in crisis and the people of the planet now fully aware of the fact that modern life is just as tough as yesteryear and we'll maybe never reach that Utopia we thought we all seeked - we can at least take some comfort in the ramblings of a man who probably likes toughened and coloured glass just a tad too much. Well should you still be reading and not skipped this post to the sunnier side of the street, I would like to make you aware of a few new pages on the website. We're attempting to provide some real guidance and knowledge for our products and as such (as you are no doubt aware if you have read/been bored by any previous posts) that the website is in the process of change. Well the glass for bathrooms page has now been revamped as has the contacts page and we're in the process of finishing a new homepage. To add to that we've got four new colours on the glass colours page with links to their own little window. Enjoy!!

Kitchen Calm is Changing (a bit)!

Hi everyone who is reading this and may be interested in news about Kitchen Calms wonderful website - for those who've stumbled here accidentally this may not only be "not of interest" but also boring enough to make you visit Rekal and implant a replacement memory in order to avert the boredom of this particular one:-).
Have a look at our new glass splashbacks for kitchens or glass splashbacks for bathrooms page. A great deal of folk seem to think that there is a physical difference between glass splashbacks for kitchens and glass splashbacks for bathrooms but the fact is - there isn't. It's fair to argue that they both have a different appeal given their eventual location, but the actual physical product is no different. However, we've decided to include a page both exlaining this and giving people a portal from which to enter the exciting world of both (once again Rekal). Enjoy! Scratches!!

Horror above horrors!! My worktop has a scratch!! What can I do?? Unfortunately with glass worktops being high gloss worktops you may suffer, should you not treat your lovely top with the upmost care, a scratch or two. However it is entirely possible to have these scratches completely removed with minimum fuss. In fact there is a whole industry in itself set up around the removal of scratches in glass and the build up of annoying things like chips (and I don't mean the potato variety). You see toughened glass worktops are not just incredibly strong and beautiful, they are also fairly easy t0 "buff up". Have a look at reface.co.uk who we've recommended on a number of occasions and have always had customers more than happy with their service. They can also (as you no doubt are already aware) remove scratches from your splashbacks if you have any (although with your splashback being perpendicular to your worktop it is a great deal harder to receive scratches - unless of course you live in M.C Escher's house)

Well very soon you will be able to do just that from our very own online shop. For sometime now we have been debating over whether or not we should have an area where folk can purchase a glass splashback (or even a glass worktop) without having to go through the uneccessary task of actually speaking to us (even though we're lovely). We decided after great debate (or in reality short chat) that this would be a good thing! Hurray!! The shop will be open as they say 24/7 and all manner of items relating to the wonderful world of glass splashbacks and glass worktops will be available for purchase. Keep watching (that is if you have a vague interest in this, what some could justifiably consider, boring topic:-)

Better late than never!!

The title of this post 'Better late than never' applies to a number of things going on here at calm/bliss hq. The one thing it isn't though is a reference to the great Brian Blessed at the end of eighties hero flick 'Flash Gordon' (only those in the know will have the vaguest clue what I'm on about here!-) No my good folk the the fact that the new bathing bliss site is still not ready but will be very very soon and the fact that Kitchen Calm still doesn't have its online store but will do very very soon (where it's going to be even easier to purchase all things glass splashback and glass worktop related) and finally the fact that the new gallery to view the splashbacks, worktops and shower screens in situ for both sites is nearly finished all relate to the 'better late than never' statement. I just hope you'll all agree when they are ready (which as repeatedly stated to the point of nausea, is in the very least better late than never!-)

A Change or Two!!

Hi all! You'll be noticing some changes over the next few weeks with both the kitchen calm and bathing bliss sites as a major overhaul is taking place. They'll still be fantastic sites to find all you need in the way of decorative and structural glass, such as glass splashbacks, glass worktops and glass shower screens, but the look and feel will hopefully be moving into an even more sleek and enjoyable experience. I mean, let's be honest, hunting for your perfect worktop or made to measure shower door can be a tad daunting and more often than not boringly laborious due to the sheer volume of sites now sitting in the land of the t'internet, but we would like to make the process a pleasure (or at the very least not so frustrating:-). Keep watch and as always have fun!

So we are led to believe! I for one love the kick a well placed chilli or ten can do to a fajita. This job above wanted to reflect this on their walls – and why not!!

It’s another glass splashback job in cayenne which seems to be quite a popular colour at the mo. All of the colours seem to move in trends as you would imagine and currently folk are into the more vibrant colours, most probably something to do with spring (and summer just round the corner – yay!).

What do you think of this luxurious lagoon worktop folks? Isn’t it lovely? Don’t you feel like you could just go ahead and dive in? Has it given you the sense that you truly are looking at a lagoon? Have I gone way too far in my enthusiasm for what is essentially a boring (albeit it beautiful) worktop? I think so!!! However you have to admit that it’s ‘bonny’ (in the words of the great Alan Titmarsh). It’s a recent job and another example of how fab we here at Kitchen Calm are.

The New Logo!!

Wow – What the…!! That’s amazing - I here you say!!! …..Or maybe not but either way the new logo for bathing bliss is here and above is the said logo as it will appear on the new site.

As we’ve said in previous posts we’re really paring down the products we supply on Bathing Bliss in much the same way we did with Kitchen Calm many moons ago. Those who remember the old Kitchen Calm may recall that as well as supplying the webs finest glass splashbacks and glass worktops we also supplied tiles, flooring, hobs, ovens even the kitchen sink!! However we realised that supplying all these extra products hampered our service and focus on glass so we dropped them all and zoned in solely on the glass (well that’s almost true as we do still offer the corian but for dramatic effect let’s forget that for this post).

In much the same manner we are aiming to do that with Bathing Bliss which should be live very soon (we hope you snowboarding webmaster peeps) and are pulling back to focus mainly on made to measure shower screens and made to measure shower doors. We’ll also be offering the glass splashbacks for bathrooms but very little else.

Hopefully all will become clear in the not too distant future. The old site is still there but is a tad fragmented so before the launch of the new one give us a call on 0845 0450336 or email us.

Do you watch TV?

In particular do you watch Saturday Kitchen with James Martin on a Saturday morning on BBC1? If so you’ll notice the lovely blue worktops they perform all of their kitchen wizardry on!! The ones in the photo to the left which James is lovingly leaning on! Well we made them!! How lovely yes? We mix in fine circles here at Kitchen Calm and you lovely folk may not be aware that as well as fabricating beautiful and exuberant glass worktops we also make Corian worktops. The colour in Saturday kitchen is a group 1 colour known as Beach Glass and was fabricated a couple of years back now. It’s a funny story as to why it was Corian instead of glass (and when I say funny of course what I truly mean is - mildly interesting with a possible smirk factor). We originally had glass planned for the all new Saturday Kitchen - as those of you who may remember Antony Worrall Thompson jumped ship to ITV (the traitor!!) and BBC rebooted the Saturday morning cooking show using James Martin as the host - but when we attended site with samples etc.. they reflected the entire lighting rig of the studio. It would appear that neither the lovely people at Cactus TV and ourselves (many years dealing with glass I should add) had realised that glass is in fact highly reflective!! It may be perfect for bringing vibrancy and light into your domestic kitchen but in a TV studio it’s a bit of a no go. So we regrouped and decided that Corian was the best option and could at least still add that touch of pizzazz which Cactus were trying to achieve.

As stated in the above parenthesis the humour may be somewhat hard to locate in that tiny tale. However Corian worktops are not so hard to locate. Have a look at our corian page and while you’re there view the splashbacks page as most folk we sell Corian to buy splashbacks aswell thus saving on site costs etc… Have fun!!

Metallic!!

Aswell as standard block colours your glass splashbacks can have a metallic effect added. This can create all manner of exciting results, the image to the left is a grey with a metallic effect which we call silver (how imaginative I here you say!-).

We are currently manufacturing a job where the customer has used our colour ‘steel’ and is having it with a metallic finish which we should hopefully have some new images of very soon.

I think you can state a firm yes to all of the above. However, the new website is our primary concern!! It’s looking fantastic and will provide you lovely people with the finest portal this side of the milky way to peruse and purchase glass and glass products for your bathroom. We’ve ditched the sanitary ware and the shower heads themselves and are now solely focused on shower screens and splashbacks.

The Magic of Colour

Colour is a peculiar and very subjective 'subject'. As my mother always said "there's no accounting for taste" (she also said eat your greens and don't annoy your brother but neither of these are particlauraly relevant to this post) and this week we've had a number of odd queries regarding what can and can't be done with colour on the glass splashbacks and worktops.

In light of these questions I've decided to write this post to explain a small amount about colour on glass and the range of effects as well as colours which we can handle.

Paint - All of the coloured glass which we fabricate and sell are painted products. The glass in itself has no colour (other than the natural green seen in a standard float glass but I'll write another post explaining this thorny subject at a later date as the majority of glass we use is low iron glass which doesn't have any green and can confuse from time to time). The colour is applied in the form of a very special resin based spray which we apply to the back of the glass.

Colour - We offer a small selection from the vast world of colour which you can view if you have a look at www.kitchencalm.co.uk/glasscolours.htm and full colour brochures are available if you'd like to email us at sales@kitchencalm.co.uk However it is possible to have practically any colour you so wish as we not only have the finest colour mixers the land has seen but also we have very simple formulas provided by the paint manufacturer who understand that lots of folk may not want the tone of pink we call marshmallow but would prefer farrow and ball cinder rose 246.

Effects - Any colour can be applied with a metallic or sparkle gloss giving it that extra touch of glamour. The most popular being silver and gold but the effect can be applied to all colour with varying degrees of sucess. The glass itself can be sandblasted in either a simple pattern or a more complex design of your own. We can also back paint textured glass such as stippolyte but in most instances you lose the effect of the texture when you paint it.

Peppermint Wall

As more and more of you lovely folk are becoming accustomed to the idea of using coloured glass splashbacks as a means to cover other walls in your home (other than those in your kitchen that is) more of your rooms are becoming transformed by glass.

Here is a picture of a job recently finished which depicts almost the entire wall behind the sink, toilet and unit in a bathroom. The colour works beautifully, as you can see, and the cleaning time I've been informed has been dramatically reduced (apparently the weekly scrub of the tile grout has not been missed :-)

It's always nice to see the finished product in situ, and this is no exception. We recently installed a frameless shower enclosure in a development in East Sussex.

The designer made good use of space keeping the look and feel cool, clean and contemporary (just how we like it a Bathing Bliss Bathrooms).

Manufactured in 8mm thick toughend clear glass and finished with highly polished aluminium hinges and glazing channel, the fixed screen was actually sunk into the side walls so that there was no polished glazing channel on show - totally frameless. I must give a mention also to the designer Martin Crawford Jones @ Crawford Jones Associates who was good to work with.

Coloured Glass Splashbacks & Vanity Worktops

Further to my posting last week regarding glass splashbacks for a shower enclosure in Newcastle, we have received a number of enquiries requesting further information. So, I thought it would be good idea to provide a brief explanation of the glass we fabricate for coloured glass splashbacks and glass vanity worktops.

For glass in the bathroom we use Opti-White clear glass which is available in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm & 15mm thickness. It has low iron content and is crystal clear - unlike standard glass which has high iron content, thus the green tint throughout. When using colour, Opti-White will give you a near perfect colour match. It is also toughened to meet all British Safety Standards and all edges are polished.

As for thickness, for glass vanity worktops we advise using 15mm thick glass; for glass splashbacks we advise using 6mm thick glass.

Colouring
Glass receives up to four coats with resin based paint, on the underside, to match a colour of your choice. We have our own colour palette which is derived from the British RAL colour chart. We can also work with most of the DULUX range of colours.

Fixing
For fixing glass to walls/surfaces we recommend using a clear low modular silicone, which can be purchased from Bathing Bliss Bathrooms or any high street DIY store. Always make sure all surfaces are straight/plumb and clean and clear of any surface grit or dirt. Also check that the surface has no fluids/agents/cleaning creams which will react with the silicone. Alternatively, we can drill holes into the corners of the glass for fixing with mirror screws.

This is a project we have just completed in Newcastle. The customer requested coloured glass splashbacks for his shower enclosure as well as small inlay tiles (right hand side wall) to finish off.

Large coloured glass splashbacks are a modern, hygienic alternative to tiling and are fast becoming an increasingly popular choice in todays' contemporary bathroom design.

OK, I'm going to say this, but the finished job looks fantastic - the glass with its reflective crisp, clean appearance has opened up the shower area and accentuates the clean lines throughout. Bathroom Planning 3: Budget, budget and budget!

Unless you're incredibly wealthy and money is no issue, the next stage needs careful consideration and meticulous scrutiny or else you may turn what could be an enjoyable and liberating experience into a miserable and costly nightmare.

Now that you have your ideas sourced and collated, its time to consider the financial aspect of bathroom design and make a detailed list covering each stage of the project. Breakdown each area as follows:

Preparation for walls, floors, ceiling, which may include external assistance from Plumbers, Plasters, Electricians and Builders;
Decorative Materials – paint, wall and floor tiles, glass splashbacks, fabrics, etc
Fixtures and fittings – sinks/basins, baths, taps and mixers taps, showers etc
Furniture and storage
Lighting
Accessories and finishing touches
And remember to include budget/final estimated costs for trade’s people such as your plumbers, electricians and builders.

Always allow for a contingency of 15-25% in your overall budget so you’re adequately prepared for any nasty shocks.

Frameless Shower Screens - a fond farewell to the shower curtain!

The modern bathroom has become a much more streamlined environment with fancy flower-patterned tiles, ornate sinks and gold taps being replaced by crisp white porcelain tiles or coloured glass splashbacks, freestanding ceramic basins mounted onto natural timber vanity worktops complemented by chrome brassware. And with the emergence of the luxury bath / walk in shower / wet room, its fair to say that the humble shower curtain has finally bit the dust!

Frameless glass shower screens are essential items for the modern bathroom. Manufactured from 6mm, 8mm or 10mm thick toughened safety glass, frameless glass shower screens provide a contemporary alternative to the redundant shower curtain with the added benefit of enlarging and transforming even the smallest bathroom space.

The word "frameless" is used to describe the overall visual appearance of the shower screen. However, this does not mean that no "frames" are used. For fixing and rigidity, all fixed frameless glass shower screens are fixed in place using glazing channel – a narrow ‘U’ shaped polished aluminium channel which the glass sits into usually within a bed of clear silicone. This holds the glass securely and produces an effective water retaining seal between the glass and finished surface.

For larger glass shower screens you will also need to attach a stabiliser bar which usually clips on to the front of the screen and is fixed to the rear or side walls for extra stability and strength.

There are numerous options available when considering frameless glass shower screens. Frameless shower enclosures can be made up of hinging glass doors, glass panels that run inline with doors (In-line panels) and glass panels that are fitted at 90 or 135 degrees to the door or inline panel and return to the wall (Return panels). All hinged glass doors have polished edges anbd are visibly frameless with no framework. In most cases the edges have a translucent plastic water seal attached.

Bathroom Planning 2: Where do I get my ideas from?

Bathroom design ideas can be sourced from a wide range of areas. Start by browsing the latest interior magazines - supermarket shelves are full of home improvement titles or visit your local library or book shop for bathroom design journals and publications.

Visit your local bathroom/home improvement stores on the high street. Depending on where you live, there is sure to be a major DIY/Home Improvement supermarket as well as more niche specialist independent retailers. Pick up literature and make notes while in store, speak to the staff to gain knowledge on what the current trends are in bathroom design.

And of course, use the internet. There are currently over 1.6 million results under the search term ‘bathroom design’ on Google alone.

Consider themes such as classical with ornate fixtures and fittings including sumptuous freestanding baths and traditional brassware; or something more modern and contemporary with coloured glass splashbacks, a glass vanity worktop and mirrors complemented by designer chrome taps with ceramic freestanding basins.

You may want to keep a scrapbook of cuttings sourced in magazines and books or book mark various websites and store in your web browser ‘Favourites’.

If you are feeling really creative why not prepare a mood board – include photographs/images, fabrics, paint swatches, tiles and any notes or artefacts which will provide a working ‘picture’ of the look and feel you want to achieve.

Towel warmer, bathroom radiator or designer room radiator?

That's the choice for today's discerning consumer. Without a doubt, chrome ladder radiators are still the number one choice in bathroom heating and are available at rock bottom prices. This style of radiator has seen prices tumble from the once chrome on brass offer to the easily imported chrome plate on steel.

One statistic true for all chrome radiators is, however, that they generally output 25% less heat than its counterpart – which sadly, consumers are blissfully unaware of this fact. Little wonder, not many manufacturers like to point this out. ‘More expense than white, but less heat output?' OK, so do we then buy for the 'look' rather than heat output and efficiency?

Bathroom Planning 1 - Where do you start?

What was once a purely functional space, the bathroom has now become a place to relax, unwind and gather your thoughts and to some, the ultimate sanctuary.

With the correct mix of design and planning, negotiating with space, implementing and managing a budget as well as a good sprinkling of creativity, you will be able to create the oasis of peace and relaxation that you have been longing for.

So where do you start?

Firstly consider for what purpose the room will be used for i.e. is it a family bathroom and must therefore cater for all members of the household ranging from young to the more mature; or an Ensuite bathroom which can be more personal and stylised for those who share their bedroom with it.

This will enable you to determine what style, look and feel your bathroom will take.

Then, like all successful DIY projects you need to plan. Start by making a scale floor plan on a piece of squared/graph paper. This will provide a realistic view of the amount of space you have to work with. As most bathrooms tend to be designed around the main fixtures such as the bath, sink, toilet and shower, plot these key elements onto your plan first.

Clearly mark on the plan where the plumbing and electrical points are located. You may wish to consult a registered and experienced, plumber and electrician regarding these issues.

Once you have the basics clearly mapped out then you can begin to formulate your ideas.
